The smallest bone in the human body is called the stapes bone, also known as the stirrup bone. It is one of the three tiny bones located in the middle ear, collectively known as the ossicles. The stapes bone, resembling a stirrup, measures just about 2.8 to 3.3 millimeters in length. Despite its small size, the stapes bone plays a vital role in our ability to hear. When sound waves enter our ear, they cause the eardrum to vibrate.  These vibrations are then transmitted through a chain of bones in the middle ear. The first bone in this chain is the malleus (hammer), followed by the incus (anvil), and finally, the stapes bone.   The stapes bone acts as a bridge between the incus bone and the inner ear. As sound vibrations pass from the incus to the stapes, they are amplified.  The stapes bone then transmits these amplified vibrations to the fluid-filled cochlea, which is part of the inner ear.
