 The stapes bone acts as a bridge between the incus bone and the inner ear. As sound vibrations pass from the incus to the stapes, they are amplified. 

The stapes bone then transmits these amplified vibrations to the fluid-filled cochlea, which is part of the inner ear. This movement of fluid stimulates hair cells within the cochlea, generating electrical signals that are sent to the brain through the auditory nerve. 

In this way, we are able to perceive and interpret sound.
The small size of the stapes bone is crucial for its function in the middle ear. Its lightweight structure, combined with the lever-like action of the ossicles, facilitates the efficient transmission of sound vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear.
